The Mercer Oak - Collection ( a witness tree in the Battle of Princeton)
The Mercer Oak was in the Battle of Princeton – on the forint lines as it were. It was used by its namesake, the mortally wounded Brigadier General, Hugh Mercer as he continued to direct his remaining men and hold the ground until Washington and his main force could come and sweep the British from the Field. This 300 year old tree succumbed to age and its own weight in 2000. Some of the wood has been saved and stored away but most has not.
